Artists Jean Ann Fausser and Sandy Sober introduced the concept of an Artists Salon. The idea sparked enthusiasm. Some of the thoughts were…creating artist memberships, electing artists from the membership to engage with VAC staff for programming and gallery development, and creating an awareness of Oklahoma Visual Arts Coalition, Tulsa Artists Coalition, Living Arts, etc. It was clear that a new organization was not needed…rather a more informal community of artists who self-advocate, share ideas and resources…and take pleasure in each others’ company.
Looking ahead…Exciting things continue to happen as we design away for the Visual Arts Center…a home for our visual arts programs! We will be in the renovated Mathews Warehouse in the Brady Arts District. As of today it looks like we will open in 2011. From visiting artists and at-risk students working together to build a community sculpture, to local artists selling work out of their studios, the VAC will be a hub of activity! At any time of the day visitors will be welcome to join the fun.
The VAC will have classrooms, studios and galleries. Students and artists will have access to professional instruction and state-of-the-art equipment. Workshops, lectures and exhibitions will be presented by local and visiting artists. Space will be available for community functions.
With this much-needed home for our visual arts programs we will reach greater numbers of youth and adults who do not currently have access to the arts. And, we will provide a place for artists to create, interact with other artists, and mentor talented young artists.
We are planning a dedicated website before the end of the year to keep you posted on the latest happenings…so stay tuned!
